Medicare Educational Guide

Understanding Medicare

Medicare can be complex. This guide explains the different parts of Medicare, enrollment periods, and how to find the right coverage for your needs.

Parts of Medicare

General information about Medicare coverage types and enrollment.

Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance)

Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health care. Most people don't pay a premium for Part A if they or their spouse paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years.

Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance)

Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, durable medical equipment, and some home health care. The standard monthly premium for Part B in 2026 is set by CMS each year.

Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage)

Private insurance plans that combine Part A and Part B coverage. Many include prescription drug coverage (Part D) and extra benefits like dental, vision, and hearing. Plans vary by county and carrier.

Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage)

Standalone prescription drug plans that help cover the cost of medications. Each plan has its own formulary (list of covered drugs) and cost structure.

Medicare Supplement (Medigap)

Supplemental insurance sold by private companies that helps pay some of the costs Original Medicare doesn't cover, such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. Standardized as Plans A through N.

Key Enrollment Periods

Initial Enrollment Period: 3 months before to 3 months after your 65th birthday. Annual Enrollment Period (AEP): October 15 – December 7. Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment: January 1 – March 31.
